5 WAYS TO MAINTAIN GOOD GUT HEALTH FOR YOUR PETS
At Kimi’s Pet emporium we often get asked about Gut health for our pets, so we thought we would give you our thoughts on how to promote it and what we know works to help improve it.
Choosing a dog food is a minefield so if you’ve got a puppy or a new dog you’ll be bombarded and probably a little unsure on what to feed and why, so here are our top tips.
Look at external independent sources like, “All about dog food”, where you’ll find a lot of information on food brands, ingredients and prices.
Diet is the major component to a healthy digestive environment and one that contains prebiotics and probiotics will contribute to a health gut microbiome.
RAW DOG FOOD
A diet that is rich in meat protein content so the obvious choice would be to feed a raw diet, however you should choose your provider wisely, as some raw foods can become contaminated very easily which could make your dog sick and ill.

DRY DOG FOOD
If you choose a dry food, then again do your research find a brand that has a high meat content that contains quality ingredients and beneficial herbs.

GRAIN FREE
Go grain-free. Although some grains are not bad for your dog, they won’t help improve their digestion and a lot of manufactures add them to their food as fillers to bulk out the more expensive meat content. You may also find in some cases that your dog may be allergic to them casing inflammation and irritation.

PROBITICS
Feed probiotics, which can be found in meats and yogurts. Ensure you only feed natural plain yogurt. It is important to check the ingredients and ensure they don’t contain Xylitol as this is an artificial sweetener that is toxic to dogs.
VACCINES & MEDICATION
Avoid unnecessary vaccines. Recent research suggests that the main core vaccines your dog gets as a puppy are sufficient and will last for several years, before they require top ups. Any unnecessary vaccines and medication can play havoc on your dog’s gut health. Do your research and discuss this with your vet.
Use natural dewormers instead of prescribed or over the counter meds as many of these can contain harmful ingredients that disrupt your dogs gut health.
More vets are recommending natural wormers such as.
· Pumpkin seeds
· Turmeric
· Clove
· Carrots
· Course grated vegetables
And the tastiest of them all are natural animal skin, feet and ears with hair and fur, they are all brilliant ways to deworm your pet and they’ll love you for it.
